Rare Antique Marquetry Inlaid Mahogany Machinist Chest 60 Tools & Orig Receipt! What I have to offer for your viewing pleasure here is this beautiful antique machinist chest! In 30 years I have never come across a machinist chest this complete or this beautiful! With its rich reddish brown mahogany box, maple marquetry inlay, the original key and each of its thirteen drawers full of tools that would be more than enough but it also has the original purchase invoice / receipt for a handful of the tools from Montgomery & Co in New York from 1927! It has a beautiful front door with the initials "F.E.H." in marquetry inlay in a rectangular checkered border, the key locks and unlocks with a firm and smooth snap. I believe this chest was custom made and dates to the 1880's to 1890's, late Victorian period and much older than the Montgomery & Co. receipt from 1927. I think it was made by a machinist for themselves and either passed down or sold to the person who purchased the tools in 1927 as the inlaid initials are completely different from the name on the 1927 invoice, there are also only 13 tools listed on the invoice. The door drops down to reveal 13 drawers, the center has not one but two center drawers surrounded by 3 more drawers on each side. The large center drawer has 3 trays, two are removable and all have their original slot dividers that can be moved around and adjusted to best fit your needs. The bottom of each drawer is finished with a panel of mahogany veneer, an incredible finishing touch in itself! The corners have a beautiful dark patina to the metal. The drawers contain an assortment of over 60 different tools, most of them are precision measuring gauges, micrometer's and etc. by L.S. Starrett and Brown & Sharpe. The purchase invoice lists 13 tools for a whopping 1.00 dollars in 1927! They did give him a discount which knocked the bill down to only .00 which was still a small fortune in 1927! It was made out to a Robert Radcliffe on West 80th Street in New York from the Montgomery & Co store on 64 Reade Street in New York City. This was pre the name change to Montgomery & Ward. It is in superb overall condition for its age with some veneer loss, the two back bottom corners were replaced at some point with L brackets and it is missing its top handle. The interior felt is in excellent condition with some spotting from the tools laying in the drawers for the last 100 years. It stands 11.5" tall by 16" wide by 8.5" deep. The key is marked "Eagle Lock Co. Conn., U.S.A." on one side and the production number "6MQ2" on the other side.
