Details
Description:
A rare and very unusual extremely fine or better 1821/1922 (1323 AH/Year 15) one Egyptian Para billon coin. The coin, which was struck in Cairo Egypt during the reign of the Ottoman Sultan Mahmud II is very unusual in the sense that it is a uniface coin showing only the reverse of these coins saying Duriba Fee Misr, current day Fustat on the outskirt of Cairo Egypt, with what we believe to be the date 1223 under it. The year 1223 AH is the year Sultan Mahmud II ascended the throne. The number 15 above the letter "Beh" in "Duriba" indicates that the coin was struck in the 15th year of the sultan's reign or 1821/1922 AD. The strike is off center and shows a wavy border but only shows the top of the accession year making it difficult to ascertain. The other side of the coin shows the negative of the inscription. Such coins are unusual and only one example is listed in Krause's book as KM# AA161 a one asper for year 23 of the sultan's reign. This coin is unlisted but shows the characteristics of KM# A131. The reason for assuming the date to be 1223 is because of the fact that the only coins listed in Krause's catalog of this size and date are the Akcheh which weighs 0.1-0.13 grams and has the diameter of 11-12 mm and are limited to Mahmud II. This coin weighs about 0.1 grams and measures approximately ~12 mm in diameter. Although undocumented, we believe this is an authentic rare and very unusual variant. Please carefully review the scan as it is part and parcel of our description.
Date:
1821/1922AD - 1223 AH Year 15.
Mint:
Egypt.
Size and weight:
This is an Akcheh, weighs ~0.1 grams and is ~12 mm in diameter.
References:
It is KM #A131.
Condition:
I would grade this coin as extremely fine or better with all the details being very well preserved. This rare and unusual uniface Akcheh coin is clean and shows minimum wear to the calligraphy. The reverse is the negative of the positive side. The coin is much better than the scan shows. It does have minor surface scratches and bag marks which can be seen in the photos. The coin has wear commensurate with its age and circulated status. Please see photo for additional condition information.
